چکیده
KEESEY, RICHARD E., AND TERRY L. POWLEY. Self-stimulation and body weight in rats with lateral hypothalamic lesions. Am. J. Physiol. 224(4) : 970-978. 1973.-Electrical self-stimulation of the posterior hypothalamus and ventral tegmentum was either eliminated or severely depressed in male rats following placement of lateral hypothalamic lesions. Though the rate of responding increased over the next 2-3 weeks, the terminal level of self-stimulation (expressed as a proportion of the stable postlesion to prelesion rate) averaged only 55y0 and was inversely related to the extent of lateral hypothalamic destruction (Y = -. 79). Body weight also declined in the postlesion period and a new maintenance level (83% of normal) was reached in the third postlesion week. This reduced level of weight maintenance was also inversely related to the percentage of lateral hypothalamic damage (Y = .86) and directly related to the chronic reduction in selfstimulation rate (Y = +. 79). A model relating central reward to the regulation of body weight is discussed.

متن کاملFood restriction and leptin impact brain reward circuitry in lean and obese Zucker rats.
The rewarding effect produced by electrically stimulating certain sites in the lateral hypothalamus (LH) can be potentiated by food restriction and body weight loss in lean rats. Central leptin and insulin administration can suppress the rewarding impact of the stimulation. To determine whether there are additional peripheral signals that mediate the effect of weight loss on brain reward circui...
متن کاملInfluence of ovarian hormones on the recovery period following lateral hypothalamic lesions.
The effects of ovariectomy and its interaction with body weight on the recovery period following lateral hypothalamic lesions were examined. The results of the experiments indicated that body weight set point prior to lesioning, liable to be influenced by hormonal and metabolic factors, is a more important variable in modifying the recovery process after lateral hypothalamic lesions than is abs...

متن کاملVENTROMEDIAL HYPOTHALAMIC NUCLEI AND FEEDING BEHAVIOR
The role of the ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus (VMN) in food behavior was studied in adult male rats, allocated in 3 groups: control, sham and lesioned. Electrolytic lesions were induced stereotaxically (1.2 mA, 15 sec). Results revealed a significant decrease (p<O.05) in body weight (BW) and food intake (FI) in the order of lesioned <sham <control during the fIrst week. However, ...
